I think I would have said free breakfast, too!! I think for most people, it's so expensive to stay in a hotel in the first place, they feel a little better if they can get a free meal before starting off their day.
I have a vivid memory of being an adolescent, on a family vacation, staying at a nice hotel that my dad's work was paying for (he was at a conference), and gawking that a tiny glass of orange juice was $3. Even at age 13, I thought, "Yikes. This will be the last time we eat at the hotel for breakfast..."
